Come and learn about the deep-sea coral and sponge gardens found off the coast of Alaska from Lara Beckmann, a researcher from the University of Gothenburg Sweden. Lara will bring you down into the depths, through the waving pink branches of the bubblegum coral, past the ruffled white sponges that look like floating lace on skinny stalks, and usher you into a magical deep-sea world filled with wonder and beauty.
Learn about this dynamic ecosystem with it's teeming biodiversity that stunned even seasoned researchers when it was discovered by NOAA in 2023. Relish the pinks and oranges, rusts, yellows and greens, discover that every corner of a coral garden is packed with life; from tiny shrimp, to crabs, octopus, fish and so much more.
Allow the Unseen Ocean collective to take you far from landlocked Spokane, deep into the waters of America's coast, and down farther than many have ever dreamed of going. This talk will be a perfect blend of science and art, exploration and discovery, information and wonder. If you have a deep love for our blue planet then join us to see her depths like you've never even dreamed of before!
When: April 2026
Where: The Chase Gallery, and Mobius Discovery Center
The Unseen Ocean is proud to annouce it's partnership with Mobius Discovery Center, Art Salvage Spokane and SAGA funding from Spokane Arts Awards to help fund 12 field trips for Spokane Public Schools.
In April the collective will host 12 separate field trips to the Chase Gallery revealing this deep-sea art show to local grade school kids. After an artists talk in the gallery the children will walk to Mobius Discovery Center to receive a science talk from Lara in the LAB space, science and art coloring pages created by the collective, and a STEAM kit developed by Art Salvage.
This kit was developed in conjunction with the Unseen Ocean Collective with funding from SAGA, each kit can be taken back to the classroom to create their own coral and sponge garden with.
These kits create one coral, one sponge and several associate species, all from common recycleables that could otherwise be entering the waste stream. The collective is thrilled to not only remove waste from a track that could potentially lead to polluting our earth, but also showcase science and art innovation, hopefully inspiring the youngest and most dynamic among us to greater earth and ocean stewardship.
Our field trip roster is currently fully booked.
Above: Our talk at the University of Alaska South in Feb 2026, special thanks to Dr. Mike Navarro for his invitation.
When: April 2026
Where: Local High Schools and Higher Education Institutions
The Unseen Ocean is thrilled to have several talks booked at local schools grades 9 and above. We are bringing a dynamic presentation that illustrates the collaboration that can take place between art and science. These talks will highlight the area of Alaska that the footage was taken in, and the art we have created from it. The Unseen Ocean Collective will also bring real world experience and advice on how to participate in an art and science collaboration, what it really means to work as a scientist, an artist, and real actionable movement that students can take to participate in being responsible deep-ocean stewards.
We are currently booking talks for school day afternoons between April 13th and 24th, please reach out via our contact form if you are a teacher at a local SPS or Spokane Valley School and are interested in receiving a free talk.
Right now Mobius Discovery Center is hosting an event display for The Unseen Ocean Collective, make sure to stop in and check it out!
During our exhibit in the month of April at the Chase Gallery you can enter a scavenger hunt photo to possibly win one of these prints!
